THE HOUSE & GROUNDS

With an atmosphere more like a country house than a hotel, Lydgate House is perfect for those looking for a relaxed environment surrounded by glorious countryside. The guests’ lounge, which also houses the small bar, has a log burning stove and beautiful views across the valley. Bookshelves and tables abound with novels, magazines and books on Dartmoor and many other subjects. A small snug leads to the conservatory dining room, again with spectacular views. The terrace and gardens overlook the valley and lead directly onto the moor.

Within the 36 acres of Lydgate House there is a Hay Meadow containing several rare species of plants including orchids. The river running through the grounds attracts a variety of birds from Buzzards and Herons to Swallows and House Martins who make their home here. Dartmoor ponies and cattle graze the fields while the paddock provides home to aged sheep and a variety of hens.

ROOMS

The seven en-suite rooms are immaculate, individually furnished and decorated. There are many personal touches to make you feel at home as well as the usual facilities of tea/coffee tray, hairdryer, remote control TV and radio-alarm clock. Duvets and top pillows are filled with luxurious Siberian goose down. All bedrooms, named after Dartmoor birds, are on the first floor except for Dipper, our only ground floor room.

  HERON

This light and airy room probably has the best views with a double aspect overlooking both the valley and the river and, for this reason, is a favourite with many guests. There is an original Victorian fireplace and the furniture is of mahogany wood with a comfortable and spacious five foot bed, armchairs and green and cream furnishings. The bathroom has a Victorian ball and claw foot bath with mixer taps and shower attachment.

  BUZZARD

Facing the rising sun and overlooking the valley, this room is large enough to accommodate the two metre wide American bed carved from maple wood. Guests have said it would be difficult to find a more comfortable bed. This is complemented by beautiful maple wood furniture, armchairs and cream and burgundy furnishings. The bathroom is home to a large Victorian ball and claw foot bath with mixer taps and shower attachment.

  KINGFISHER

This charming double room overlooks the river and is full of afternoon sunshine. The furnishings are of blue and cream with pale wood dressing table and chairs. The fully tiled bathroom is equipped with a new power shower.

  WAGTAIL

This double bedroom faces west towards the setting sun and has a large, comfortable double bed with matching oak furniture. A sitting room to the side contains a substantial sofa (extending to a further double bed if required) with TV and tea/coffee facilities. Occasionally, Dartmoor ponies will peer in at the window. Framed prints by Sheppard of Pooh Bear and friends complement the furnishings of green and beige. The bathroom has a bath with mixer taps and shower attachment. Wagtail is let as a double, twin or triple room.

  HOUSE MARTIN

This room, which faces due south over the river, is aptly named from the birds nesting under the eaves outside the window. It is a small cottage-style room with green and yellow furnishings. There is a double bed next to the window, armchairs and pine furniture. The bathroom is fitted with a power shower. House Martin is let as a single room.

  WREN

This sweet room, tucked under the eaves with two cottage-style windows, is furnished with a single bed, armchair and pine wardrobe unit. Facing west and catching the last rays of the setting sun, it is decorated in blue and cream. The bathroom contains a power shower.

DIPPER

This is the only bedroom on the ground floor. Furnished in oak, Dipper has a very comfortable double bed with a separate sitting area with sofa, bookcase, TV and tea/coffee making facilities. The room is part of the original house with thick granite walls; a large tapestry covering the whole of one wall gives a medieval feel. There is also a private conservatory sitting room overlooking a small garden (as shown below) and catching all the afternoon and evening sun.
Dipper is let as a double room.

Note:
For those rooms on the first floor with en-suite shower rooms there is an additional and separate bathroom where guests may soak in a bath if they choose. Towelling bathrobes are available.
