Step into another century at Cotehele, a beautifully preserved medieval house owned by the National Trust. Once an ancestral home of the Edgcumbe family, and unlike many great houses. It still retains much of its original medieval and Tudor character, stone walls, tapestry hung halls.
The estate stretches over acres of gardens, woodlands and winding paths through the formal terraces, orchards, and herbaceous borders. Cotehele Quay, once a bustling hub of river trade. You’ll find the restored sailing barge Shamrock, a tearoom, and tranquil riverside walks.
Part of the estate is Cotehele Mill, a working 19th century watermill, where you can learn about traditional flour production.
Don’t Miss:
• The Cotehele Chapel, peaceful and atmospheric, with original stained glass
• The seasonal garland in the Great Hall at Christmas, an unforgettable sight
Local Secret: Cotehele’s riverside walk is especially beautiful in spring when wild garlic and bluebells carpet the woods.
Top Tip: Don’t rush, Cotehele is best enjoyed slowly. Bring comfortable shoes to explore the estate walks and riverside quay.
