Step into over 7 centuries of history at Buckland Abbey, a magnificent estate that has been a place of prayer, power, and exploration through the ages. Originally founded by Cistercian monks in the 13th century, the abbey later became the private residence of Sir Richard Grenville, and then the legendary Sir Francis Drake, whose influence still echoes through its halls and gardens.
Now under the care of the National Trust, Buckland Abbey is part museum, part manor house, offering an immersive look into Devon’s past, from the quiet devotion of monastic life to the bold adventures of England’s seafaring age. Inside, you’ll find fascinating artefacts, including the famed Drake’s Drum, said to sound in times of national crisis, along with paintings, tapestries, and maritime treasures that tell stories of exploration, trade, and personal ambition.
One of the highlights of the estate is the magnificent Great Barn, an enormous and beautifully preserved 13th century structure that remains virtually unchanged since it was built. With its soaring beams, stone walls, and atmospheric interior, it’s a powerful reminder of the abbey’s monastic origins.
Outside, the estate offers peaceful gardens, orchards, and woodland walks, Ideal for a gentle stroll or picnic.
